Wisnu Sasongko is an Indonesian artist who was born into a Christian family. He entered the Fine Art School in Yogyakarta on 1992 and continued his studies at the State Fine Art Institute at the same area. He was invited to as an artist in residence in the Overseas Ministries Study Center in New Haven, Connecticut from 2004-2005, where he held a number of exhibits and published his book: “Think on These Things.”

 

His works have been featured in Image magazine. Instead of depicting Biblical stories Wisnu’s art usually shows contemporary realities. Jaime Lara of Yale University describes Sasongko's paintings as “more than just a work or an action, but also a meditation.”

1991 Junior High School Yogyakarta- active participant in local painting competitions
1995 Graduated from SMSRN Yogyakarta (Major Fine Art School)
1996 Entered at Fine Art Faculty ISI Yogyakarta
2001 Final Task, Thesis & solo painting exhibition, "Human Illuminated as a Source of Painting Ideas".
2002 Graduated from Fine Art Faculty ISI Yogyakarta (Undergraduate degree/ S. Sn.)
2006 Cultural Studies for Master Graduate program at Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta.
2010 Final Thesis “Imaji Kerakyatan dalam Lima Karya Hendra Gunawan; Kajian Estetis dan Ideologis” (Post Graduate degree/ M. Hum).
2013 Art teacher for SMP-SMA at Tunas Bangsa Christian School at Gading Serpong, Tangerang.

:: Artistic Experience

Wisnu Sasongko has been a professional artist since 1998. Since then He has held various exhibitions both in his local, Indonesia- Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Bandung, Bali .and internationally in USA , Canada , Switzerland , Malaysia and Singapore.

In 2004, he was invited to be an artist-residence at the Overseas Ministries Studies Center in New Haven CT, USA. This program was sponsored by the United Board of Christian Higher Education Asia. During his one year stay, he was able to study and tour at art museums, have a solo exhibit, create a book and a short movie.

In 2008 he was invited by Vishnu S Mission 21 to present the results of Christian Art in Basel - Zurich, Switzerland.

Wisnu has been frequently invited as a resource person in Christian Art Expression. He has given talks in various universities in Yogyakarta, Bandung, Tangerang and Jakarta.

In 2010, he became one of the founders of SERUNI or the Seni Rupa Kristiani Indonesia, an Indonesian Christian artists group. SERUNI aims to promote and develop Christian Arts in Indonesia through collaborative activities with Universities, galleries and church institutions. They have held events in partnership with the Maranatha Christian University in Bandung (2011- 2012), School of Theology Jakarta (STT, 2012) , Pelita Harapan University ( regular exhibitions since 2011 until present), the Great Commission School of Theology (2012 ). SERUNI’s latest exhibit-“ ART & Religion” (Sept. 2013) at the Pelita Harapan University included a discussion with Prof. Bambang Sugiharto.

Wisnu’s works have neem published in various publications- such as calendar and magazines. He also made a book entitled: “Think on These Things : Harmony and Diversity " that was published by OMSC in 2008. His works were also included in the international catalog "The Christian Story: Five Asians Artists Today", published by Mobia Museum, New York City, USA in 2007.
