Sawai Chinnawong

Sawai Chinnawong is a Thai artist who depicts Bible narratives in the Thai setting.  He was born on 1959 in Ratchaburi Province and has studied in at the McGilvary College of Divinity in Payap University in Chiang Mai. His interest in art began when he saw the murals inside Buddhist temples, but after converting to Christianity his local pastor told him that his art was Buddhist. After hearing Sri Lankan artist, Nalini Jayasuriya’s, lecture, he was encouraged to paint again. He combines traditional Buddhist symbolisms in depicting Bible stories.

He was invited at the Overseas Ministries Studies Center's artist in residence program from September 2003 to June 2004,  and has exhibited and published a book as a result of his stay there.
