Gede Sukana Kariana

Gde Sukana Kariana is an ethnic Balinese, born on the 13th of October 1974 in Central Sulawesi. He now lives on the island with his wife and two daughters. He graduated from the Indonesian Art Institute with a degree in Fine Arts in 1999 and has exhibited his artworks in Denpasar, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Australia, Singapore, United States, and Sweden since then. His art has been published in several books and magazines.

In 2003, Gde along with other artist colleagues founded the Bali Christian Art Association (BCAA). Later in 2010, he also co-founded the Indonesian Christian Community Artists (SERUNI). He has been a member of the Asian Christian Art Association (ACAA) since 2003.

At a young age, he was sent by his mother to live in an orphanage; and with much difficulty he completed his formal education in art painting. He built his own studio at his grandmother's house in the village and concentrated to pour his imagination into his paintings. Gde supports his family by selling artworks and by teaching art to children. His work is very unique; it has an appeal created by the fine lines that sometimes alternate with the clear transparent moving rhythm. His paintings of Bible stories have been collected and published widely. His Christian faith is expressed through his indigenous artworks; he encourages other Christians to the same.
