Edgar "Egai" Fernandez was born in the Philippines in 1955. After studying fine arts, he showed enough promise to begin painting professionally.

Inspired by the struggle for freedom in his country he became active in Concerned artists of the Philippines (CAP), a group using their talents for social change. Like many in the group he developed a style of social realism which had a popular appeal to ordinary people.

As a strong supporter of the Asian Christian Arts Association, he became the Coordinator-at large of the organization and has been able to travel and talk with artists from other countries.
